The StoryWhat is it about families that makes people do such crazy things? Why do seemingly content husbands, wives and daughters sneak out into the moonlight? As crazy as love is, what keeps the funny, luminous, passionate cycles of romance and creation repeating over and over again? With "Polish Wedding," writer/director Theresa Connelly combines classic Hollywood romanticism with a fresh and vital look at the blood ties that bind us all. Her story focuses on the love, jealousies and entanglements facing a working class, Polish-American clan from Detroit. Lena Olin heads a compelling cast as the still sexy and smart matriarch; Gabriel Byrne is her sensitive but suspicious baker husband; and Claire Danes is daughter Hala, the eye of the family's tempestuous storm. This proud, charming, hard-working family could come straight out of a classic studio romance of the '30s or '40s, yet is totally contemporary in Connelly's tale. She brings a feminine spirit and insight to characters who are at once real and ideal -- who lead both harsh and fairy tale lives. |
