Waking Ned DevineAVAILABLE ON HOME VIDEO & DVD
CAST & CREWDirected & Written by: |
The StoryFrom the land where fairy tales were born comes a disarmingly original comic fable about the true meaning of fortune. As bracing as a shot of Irish whiskey and as rollicking as the wild Irish sea, Waking Ned Devine invites audiences into the enchanting village of Tulaigh Morh (pronounced Tulley More), population 52 and shrinking. Jackie O’Shea (Ian Bannen) and Michael O’Sullivan (David Kelly) are two life-long friends who have a talent for getting into mischief. Big believers in luck and dreams, the two have long obsessed over winning the national lottery. In their sleepy, cozy Irish village, even a wee jackpot would go a long, long way. So it is with great excitement that they read in the city newspaper that someone in Tulaigh Morh possesses a winning ticket. They figure it should be easy to sniff out the winner -- in such a small town no one can keep a secret -- and it should be a breeze to convince the winner to share his or her earnings with such good friends as Jackie and Michael. The lucky bastard could be Finn, the odorous pig farmer (James Nesbitt) or his sensuous, scent-sensitive lover Maggie (Susan Lynch). It might be the happy-go-lucky post-mistress or it could be shriveled, witchy Lizzie Quinn (Eileen Dromey), the town’s blackest-souled member. But after investing several bottles of fine whiskey and 18 chickens to smoke out their newly wealthy neighbor, Jackie and Michael have gotten little more than drunk and stuffed. Meanwhile, Jackie’s sly wife Annie (Fionnula Flanagan) is getting a bit peeved. And that’s when they discover that one member of the village is missing: sweet old Ned Devine. |
